Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has once again made headlines as he declined to open his defence in the terrorism case brought against him by the Federal Government (FG). The case, which has been a focal point of national attention for years, resumed in court on Monday, drawing legal experts, journalists, and supporters eager to witness developments firsthand.

Kanu, who recently made the bold decision to dismiss his legal team and represent himself in court, told the presiding judge that after carefully reviewing his case file, he could find no valid charge against him. According to him, the entire prosecution lacks legal grounding, and continuing the proceedings would amount to defending a “non-existent” charge.

“There’s No Law Supporting These Charges”

During the session, Kanu addressed the court and emphasized his position, stating: “Join me in praising God. I have gone through my case file, and there is no charge against me.” He elaborated that the prosecution had failed to cite any existing law that could substantiate the accusations leveled against him. Kanu maintained that without a legal basis, the charges were baseless and should not warrant a defence from him.

“There is no extant law in this country upon which the prosecution can predicate the charges against me. If there’s any, let my Lord read it out to me,” Kanu added, highlighting what he perceives as a fundamental flaw in the case and questioning the legal legitimacy of the proceedings. His statement underscores ongoing debates about the application of anti-terrorism laws in Nigeria and the rights of defendants in high-profile cases.

Kanu Demands Release or Bail

Following his declaration, Kanu called on the court to either release him immediately or grant him bail. He argued that it would be unjust to defend himself against charges that, in his view, do not exist. By taking this stance, Kanu has once again brought the focus to procedural justice, the rule of law, and the responsibilities of the prosecution to substantiate claims in accordance with Nigerian law.

The court subsequently adjourned the case for further hearing to consider his position. Legal analysts suggest that this development could significantly influence the trajectory of the case, potentially prompting a review of the prosecution’s approach or even raising broader questions about the enforcement of terrorism-related charges in the country.

Social media has since been abuzz with reactions to Kanu’s statement. Many Nigerians are expressing astonishment, some voicing support for his confidence in asserting his legal rights, while others debate the implications of his refusal to engage with the charges. The case continues to spark heated discussions across online platforms, highlighting its enduring relevance and the strong public interest surrounding Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB activities.
