A viral video capturing the convoy of the Edo State Governor stranded in a massive flood has stirred intense debate and reactions across various social media platforms.

According to reports, the incident occurred along one of the major roads in Benin City after heavy rainfall that lasted for several hours. The governor’s motorcade, consisting of official vehicles and security escorts, was seen struggling to maneuver through the flooded area as water levels rose significantly, disrupting movement.

In the footage making rounds online, several bystanders could be heard expressing shock and amusement as they recorded the scene. Some residents were seen wading through the water, while others lamented the poor state of drainage systems that had long plagued the city. The flood reportedly caused severe traffic congestion, leaving motorists and pedestrians stranded for hours.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that the flood was a result of blocked drainage channels, inadequate road maintenance, and the lack of proper flood control systems in some parts of Benin City. Many claimed that the situation was not new, as residents have continued to endure similar ordeals during every rainy season.

This recent development has intensified discussions about the government’s responsiveness to infrastructural challenges. Critics argue that despite multiple promises and budget allocations for road rehabilitation, the state continues to experience the same recurring issues every year.

Mixed reactions trail the viral video

As the video spread across X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, many Nigerians took to the comment sections to share their opinions. While some found humor in the irony of government officials facing the same challenges as the citizens, others viewed it as a moment of reflection and accountability.

A user on X commented, “Nature no dey do VIP — flood no dey know governor or citizen.” Another wrote, “Maybe now they will understand what ordinary people go through every day.” Many netizens agreed that the incident served as a wake-up call for authorities to prioritize lasting infrastructural solutions rather than temporary fixes.

Others, however, defended the governor, noting that flooding is a natural occurrence that can happen anywhere, especially during heavy rainfall. They called for collective responsibility, urging residents to also avoid dumping waste in gutters, which contributes to drainage blockage.

Calls for government intervention

Following the incident, several civic groups and residents of Edo State have renewed their calls for immediate government action to address the poor drainage network in Benin City. They emphasized that recurring floods not only damage property and disrupt businesses but also pose serious health and safety risks to the populace.

Community leaders have also appealed to the governor to launch a statewide assessment of flood-prone areas, implement better water management systems, and enforce urban planning regulations to prevent future occurrences. They believe that with proper planning and commitment, such embarrassing incidents can be avoided in the future.

As conversations around the viral clip continue to dominate online spaces, many Nigerians see it as both a symbolic and literal representation of the need for better governance and infrastructural development in Edo State.
