Obiageli Juliana Okoro, a outspoken UK-based Nigerian woman, has stirred conversations online after issuing a bold and unapologetic message to people dealing with relatives who only reach out when they need money.
In her viral post, Obiageli addressed a situation many people — especially those living abroad — quietly endure: being used as a financial lifeline by family who rarely call unless there is a monetary request involved.
She emphasized that constantly being contacted only for financial assistance is emotionally draining and unfair, urging people to protect their peace and set firm boundaries.
Sharing her thoughts on Facebook, she wrote:
“If your family only calls you for financial help, block them. You are more than 2 in your family, but you are the only one they call for financial help! Block them! If anything happens to you… they will move on sharply.”
Her message struck a chord with many, particularly Nigerians in the diaspora who often feel pressured by never-ending financial expectations from relatives back home.
Obiageli’s advice sparked a wave of reactions online. Some users applauded her for speaking the truth many are afraid to say out loud, calling her message refreshing and empowering. They agreed that constantly giving without support in return can leave one emotionally exhausted and financially strained.
Others, however, argued that cutting off family completely might be extreme, suggesting that setting clear boundaries and communicating limits may be a healthier approach than blocking relatives outright.
Still, many pointed out that self-protection is necessary, noting that being abroad does not automatically mean one is financially abundant, and emotional well-being must come first.
Her post ultimately delivered a powerful reminder: having a good heart does not mean allowing yourself to be taken advantage of. Healthy relationships — even with family — require balance, respect, and mutual support.
